New York Yankees Hats

When you think of baseball, you think of the USA, you think of New York, and you can hardly avoid thinking of the New York Yankees. The New York Yankees have their home in the middle of New York City, in the Bronx. Here you will also find the stadium, simply called "Yankees Stadium", that they share with New York City FC (a soccer club of the MLS - Major League Soccer). With a construction cost of 1.5 billion USD, it is currently one of the most expensive ten sports stadiums in the world.

The New York Yankees are arguably the best-known and also most successful franchise in Major League Baseball (MLB) and have now grown into a global brand.

Birth in Baltimore

Because of their name alone, one inevitably associates the New York Yankees with the global metropolis of New York. But the team's roots go all the way back to Baltimore, where they were seen on the field from 1901 to 1902. Only then did they move to New York. The name Yankees was established by the media. For from 1903 to 1912, the team called itself the New York Highlanders. However, this name did not appeal to the media. They asked for a more concise name and created the name Yankees. After some time, the team also adopted it.

Trade to rise

Since the Yankees are so legendary, one assumes that the franchise was successful from the beginning. But far from it. That's because from 1903 to 1918, they came within reach of participating in the World Series only once. Success came with a trade. In fact, with one of the biggest trades in Major League Baseball history. In December 1919, the New York Yankees secured the rights to Babe Ruth. He was to go down in history as the best player. The trade paid off in just his second season in 1921. The Yankees reached the World Series for the first time, but lost to the then New York Giants. This was nevertheless the beginning of an unprecedented success story. Two years later, the team reached the World Series for the third time. Once again, they took the field against the New York Giants. Led by Babe Ruth, they defeated the Giants 4-2 and lifted the World Series trophy for the first time in 1923. More titles followed in the Babe Ruth era in 1924, 1927, 1928 and 1932.

Triumph and Slump

The championship team of Earls Comby, Babe Ruth, Tony Lazzeri and Lou Gehring went down in history as Murderers Row. Nearly 100 years later, that lineup is still considered the best ever to play in MLB. Over the decades, the Yankees became the most successful MLB team. They reached 40 World Series appearances, won 27 titles, including as many as five in a row in the 1950s. But an institution like the Yankees is feeling today's mass of competition. The team reached its last World Series to date in 2009, and the decade between 2010 and 2020 was the first in nearly 100 years in which the Yankees did not appear in the World Series.

Starting a World Brand

While previous New York Yankees venues were used to continuous play, the current stadium has only seen one World Series. Opened in 2009 in the Bronx, the venue seats about 46,000 spectators. It is strongly reminiscent of its predecessor, as its facade is also faced with granite. Even though the stadium is one of the newer ones in the league, it houses enough history. For one thing, there's Monument Park, where important Yankee personalities have been memorialized. On the other hand, there is a trophy room where fans can admire the awards they have achieved. The New York Yankees own probably the most famous logo in MLB. The popular interlocking NY has long stood not only for the team, but for the entire city of New York. And caps and jerseys of the Yankee players are also adorned with the NY. To dominate baseball for decades like the Yankees did, you can't only do it with a team you bought together. Training young talent is an important cornerstone. They can be taught the Yankee DNA from the start. The minor league teams, the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Railriders, the Somerset Patriots, the Hudson Valley Renegades and the Tampa Tarpons do this job.
