The Atlanta Hawks were founded as Tri-Cities Blackhawks in 1946 and moved to Milwaukee in 1951 and St. Louis in 1955 before finally arriving in Atlanta in 1968. In the 70s Pistol Pete Maravich had a show at the Atlanta Hawks and in the 80s Dominique Wilkins took over this part. Under star coach Lenny Wilkens the team was always successful, but could never make the big step towards the title. Even the popular center Dikembe Mutombo could not lead the Hawks to the title in the mid 90s. The Atlanta Hawks always played for the playoffs, but never for championships. Under head coach Mike Budenholzer that should change in 2013. With the German build-up player Dennis Schröder, the Hawks won 60 victories in the east in 2015, but failed in the east final due to Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. So this team gradually broke up, so that a rebuild was started in 2017. In the 2018 draft, the new star player Tre Young was signed, around whom a powerful team is to be formed.

The Atlanta Hawks team colors are red, black and yellow-green. Most Atlanta Hawks hats are therefore black, navy or red. The current Hawks logo shows a circular contour in which a falcon can be seen. It is surrounded by a red circle that says Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club. The logo is a tribute to the team logo from 1973-95, which had become known as the upside-down PACMAN. In 1971 the team changed the team colors for green and blue, but returned to the old colors after only one season.
