The Minnesota Timberwolves were founded in 1989. You play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. They play their home games in the Target Center in Minneapolis in front of up to 18,798 spectators. The name is derived from the Minnesota native wolf. The first few years were marked by failure. Rookies like Luc Longley, Christian Laettner or Isaiah Rider couldn't really hit it. Only with the draft of Kevin Garnett in 1995 and Stephon Marbury the following year began a promising period. The Timberwolves played regularly in the playoffs, and Garnett was named the NBA MVP in 2004. The promising duo only lasted 2 years, because Stephon Marbury left the Timberwolves because of different ideas about a new contract. After 12 years with no real team success, Kevin Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics and Kevin Love became a key player in the Wolves in 2008. In 2014 this was passed on to the Cavaliers in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and in 2015, Karl-Anthony Towns was drafted as the next franchise player, who was joined by a real star in 2017 with Jimmy Butler. Butler couldn't get on with Wiggins and Towns and quickly changed clubs. Most recently, Wiggins was also traded for D’Angelo Russell of the Golden State Warriors, so that the future is now in the hands of Towns and Russell.
