The Seattle SuperSonics were founded in 1967 and won their first and only championship in 1979 under head coach Lenny Wilkens and MVP Dennis Johnson. During the 80s, the Sonics had a sporting slump that only ended in the 90s. Players like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp were drafted and provided success again with Head Coach George Karl. In 1995/96, the Sonics, with German forward Detlef Schrempf, achieved an outstanding record of 64-18, but lost in the NBA Finals to Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls. Players like Vin Baker, Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis brought hope back to Seattle in the early 2000s, but the big coup was never to come. In 2006, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz sold the Sonics to a group of Oklahoma City entrepreneurs.
Although they initially promised to keep the Sonics in Seattle, the team had to move in 2008 after they could not agree with the city of Seattle on a new building. Kevin Durant was the last star Seattle drafted. In his first year, Durant was Rookie of the Year, but the following year the franchise moved to Oklahoma City and was renamed the Thunder. Which colors and logos are most popular with Seattle SuperSonics?
The original logo of the Sonics from 1968 shows the Space Needle, the city's landmark, in a basketball. By 1975, there were 2 adaptations, from a plain basketball with a name inside to a word-only logo. It wasn't until 1976 that the color yellow was added and the semi-circular green logo with Seattle's skyline was introduced. In 1996, they shortened the team name to Sonics and this was reflected in the new logo, which prominently featured the word SONICS, with the Space Needle in the background and more shades of orange and red. In 2002, the last logo in franchise history was introduced. The Space Needle disappeared along with the orange tones and a simple S with a basketball behind it became the new Sonics logo from then on with a green backboard and the name above it. Most Seattle SuperSonics caps today have the semi-circular Skyline logo from 1975 or the orange Sonics logo from 1996.
