The Miami Marlins are one of the younger teams in MLB history. Founded in 1993 as the Florida Marlins to bring together fans from all over the state, they have been competing in the National League East under their current name, the Miami Marlins, since 2012. The name Marlins was derived from a spearfish and was meant to represent the bond to the Sunshine State of Florida and their nature.
Despite the relatively short team history of just under 30 years, Miami has already enjoyed great success. Four years after their founding, the Marlins ascended to the MLB throne. Led by players like Bobby Bonilla and Gary Sheffield, they beat Cleveland as underdogs in the all-important Game 7 after 2 extra innings with 3-2 runs. A full 6 years later in 2003, this coup could be repeated at the second World Series participation. In what was supposed to be a hopeless effort, they beat the big favorites, the New York Yankees after 6 games and thus secured the crown once again.
The Marlins thus maintained their perfect World Series record, which they currently share only with the Toronto Blue Jays. After that, the city and the franchise had to go through a deep valley, because it took 17 years until they were able to participate in the postseason again.
The success, however, was achieved at what is now Hard Rock Stadium. Their own ball park, LoanDepot Park, which was not ready for occupancy until 2012, is still waiting for the World Series experience. With the creation of your ball park, you finally made a commitment to the city of Miami. The new venue in the Little Havana neighborhood was much more centrally located and the whole design, the bright colors, the walls, everything is a tribute to the city of Miami.
LoanDepot Park joined the ranks of certified eco-friendly ballparks, and was the 6th stadium with a sliding roof. It is also the third smallest stadium in MLB with a capacity of 37,442.
With the move, they made a commitment to the city of Miami with their name and logo. The Florida Marlins became the now famous Miami Marlins. The well known alternate logo, with the spear fish around the F, is still often seen today, but is no longer officially in play.
The new motif was a colorful big M, but it only lasted 6 years, because already in 2019 the Marlins changed their design again. Emerged is a logo, with the reference to the past but also to the city of Miami. The Marlin was back. In the new team colors black, blue and red, he now jumps next to a baseball. Rounding out this primary logo, with the Miami lettering below. Since 2019, the Alternate logo has been featured on the on field caps.
The term Marlin is omnipresent in the franchise and is emblazoned at chest level on the jerseys as well. Because of this connection to the swordfish, the team is often referred to as The Fish. Successes on the field remained rather scarce, but for furore you provided in the MLB anyway.
At the end of 2020, Miami introduced a novelty. They signed Kim Ng, the first woman who has ever taken a leading position in one of the 4 major US leagues, in this case as general manager.
Throughout the years, the franchise from the Sunshine State has produced many talented players. Players like Marcell Ozuna, Giancarlo Stanton, JT. Realmuto and Christian Yelich, were trained in the farm system consisting of minor league teams Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimps, Pensacola Blue Wahoos, Beloit Sky Camp and Jupiter Hammerheads. Producing such players, and best of all retaining them, is what Miami intends to build its success on in the future.
