The Los Angeles Lakers were founded in 1946 and initially played in Minneapolis under the name "Minneapolis Lakers". The name Lakers can be traced back to the state of Minnesota, as it is known for its numerous lakes (Land of 10,000 Lakes). In 1960 the Lakers finally moved to Los Angeles and kept the Lakers name. In 1968, the Lakers signed the Center Wilt Chamberlain and tried to get a title to LA for the first time. It took another three years, however, and in 1972 the Lakers celebrated their first title in Los Angeles. After signing Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the Lakers were able to draft Earvin Magic Johnson in 1979 with the 1-round pick. The next title for the LA franchise followed in 1982. Together with James Worthy, the Lakers won three more titles in the following years (85.87.88) and the team went down in history under the name "Show Time Express".
After mostly unsuccessful years, the LA Lakers drafted Kobe Bryant in 1996 and signed Shaquille O'Neal in the same year. However, the team could not enter a championship in the following years. Only when Phil Jackson was hired as coach in 1999 did success come back to Los Angeles. The Lakers won 4 more titles in the years that followed until 2010 and are still the NBA's second most successful franchise to this day.
